Our Perspective

You know the Hohner name is synonymous with harmonicas. We know these little harmonicas are incredibly classroom and group event friendly! These easy to play harmonicas are a fantastic value and have a great sound. Beginning players are able to achieve a pleasant tone right from the start and the uneven breathing patterns needed to play harmonica encourage healthy lungs. And of course, there’s just a “cool factor” about harmonicas that makes your older elementary and middle school students want to play!  -Melissa

Have fun creating music with your students while positively affecting their wellbeing with a colorful, translucent harmonica from Hohner. This type of wind instrument requires controlling breathing with both inhaling and exhaling which can improve children’s concentration levels and reduce stress and anxiety. This 10-hole harmonica uses durable materials from brass reads to an injection molded plastic body that can last through the wear and tear a child can bring. To offer added protection, the harmonica comes with a clear sleeve to safeguard it when not in use.

Need a quality product at a very reasonable cost for a special film/music event centered around the harmonica.
Holley D on Feb 11, 2013
These harmonicas are inexpensive (which my parents love). They have 10 holes (while the First Act ones a child found in our local store only has 6) and a decent sound that isn't quite as loud as the $8 harmonicas found in my local music store.

do they have good sound and are they easy to make a note?
Elizabeth W on Mar 7, 2012
BEST ANSWER: Elizabeth,
The Honer harmonicas are awesome! I used them with my 6th graders and they were easy to play and they felt success quickly. Great quality, I never had one break. The tone was good. I recommend the Just Play It! curriculum by Kevin Burt. Easy to follow and gives a good foundation to start with!
What is the best way to sanitize these harmonicas between use with multiple students?
Lori S on Jan 13, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I use Chlorox Anywhere Spray. It's safe and non-toxic for use with children, and you can spray it inside to get all the areas. I usually try to give it some time to air dry after spraying, but if needed I tap it out with a paper towel and towel dry the outside 2-3 minutes after spraying. The spray says it needs to stay on at least 2 minutes to sanitize. During my internship we used Sani-Sense, a food service sanitizer, in a spray bottle or in a small tub to dunk them in. There are probably other products, but these are the ones I have personal experience with.
We want to use these in a reverse engineering project, are they held together with screws or are they riveted?
Chris on Apr 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I'm sorry to say, they are held together with a magic force field…called music. Good luck reverse engineering music! The shell and reed plates are held to the frame by little bolts with tiny Phillips heads and thin, square stylized nuts. The reeds are held to the reed plate each by a rivet. The plastic case is held to the harmonica by a fold and tuck. As with any system in which there's a magic force, the question arises, what is the music held together by? Tradition, Chris, tradition!
Is this a full-sized harmonica?
A shopper on Jun 13, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It is thinner than a metal hohner beginner harmonica. The length is the same. It has a nice sound and is a good beginner harmonica. I have used it at school with my students for 7+ years and have been very happy.
does this harmonica have a hole so that staff could put a lanyard through it??
A shopper on Aug 10, 2012
BEST ANSWER: The Hohner Kids CCH Cleary Colorful Translucent Harmonicas in the key of C that I ordered in May of 2011 do not have holes to attache a lanyard. Check with Hohner to see if they will upgrade the model and add holes to attach a lanyard.
what's the best way to keep them clean? Apart from plastic is there stainless steel inside?
alicia w on Jul 8, 2014
BEST ANSWER: There is a germicide, Sterisol Concentrate or Premixed Spray, that you can use. Just follow the directions on the bottle. Also, bleach water will work, too...possibly not getting all the bacteria/germs/viruses, etc. (if they are present). I also use lysol wipes, or spray bleach, on most hand held instruments. With woods, I wipe with a sanitation cloth...then hand dry.

There is a metal plate on the inside, potential to rust if left wet, but with drying it on it's side, with the blow holes down, so nothing stays in, and not sealing it back up in the plastic case...it dries well in a few days.

Also, Google - "germicide for harmonicas" to get other ideas!

Good luck!
Is the harmonica safe for a 4yr old concern? Is it large enough with no choke hazard?
A shopper on Apr 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This harmonica is perfectly safe for a 4yr old to use. It's a full sized harmonica so it shouldn't be a choking hazard.
